Shopify
One script tag in theme.liquid, what it covers and what it does not.
Add CommentKit
- In CommentKit, open Project → Setup, copy your project key and add every address people will review on: your store’s
https://your-store.myshopify.comaddress and your own domain, for examplehttps://shop.example.com. Use the exact address: a wildcard such as*.webflow.iois refused, because anyone can host a site there. - In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes. Next to the theme, click the … button and choose Edit code. To try it first, choose Duplicate and edit the copy.
- Under Layout, open
theme.liquid. - Paste the tag on the line just before
</body>, near the end of the file, and click Save. - Open your store and press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + K to check that the feedback button appears.
<script src="https://commentkit.dev/cdn/v1/loader.js" data-project="pk_live_your_key" defer></script>What it covers
- Every page your theme draws: home, collections, products, cart, blog and pages.
- Not checkout, the Thank you page or the order status page. Shopify builds those itself and does not use
theme.liquid, so CommentKit cannot appear there. - This is your own theme code, not Shopify’s script tag API. Shopify stopped new script tags on 1 October 2026 and stops showing existing ones on 1 March 2027; a tag in
theme.liquidis not affected. - A CommentKit Shopify app (a theme app embed you switch on in the theme editor) is not available yet.
- Installing a new theme, or a theme update that replaces files, starts from a fresh
theme.liquid. Paste the tag again afterwards.
Show it to clients
Open Project → Client links, create a link (for example “Anna – homepage review”) and send it by email, Slack or WhatsApp. It opens your store with the feedback button ready. Your client confirms their email once; no account or password.
Teammates open the site and press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + K, or follow any CommentKit email. After they sign in once, the widget shows for them on that device.
Keep it off the live site
You do not need to do anything for regular visitors. On every address except localhost, the widget stays hidden until someone opens a client link, follows a CommentKit email, presses Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + K or is already signed in. Visitors only download a tiny loader and see nothing. Do not add data-hide-on-production="false" on a live site: it shows the button to everyone.
To review a redesign before it goes live, paste the tag only into a duplicated theme. Shoppers on the published theme never load CommentKit. Open the copy with Preview in Online Store → Themes and press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + K.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing appears: check you edited the theme you are looking at (the published one, or the copy you are previewing), and that the store address is in Project → Setup.
- Apps that speed up or bundle scripts should leave
loader.jsalone; exclude it in their settings. - Still nothing? Open the browser console: CommentKit writes one message starting with
[CommentKit]that says what went wrong (for example a website address missing from Project → Setup, or a Content Security Policy; see the CSP guide). The troubleshooting page covers the rest.
